Service Description

The Highfield Level 2 Award in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) is a nationally recognised qualification designed to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding required to work safely with hazardous substances in the workplace. The course is aimed at employees, supervisors and individuals who may encounter or handle substances that could pose risks to health, helping them understand their responsibilities and the importance of maintaining a safe working environment. Many workplaces use or store substances that can be harmful if not handled correctly. These may include chemicals, cleaning products, dust, fumes, gases, vapours, biological agents and other hazardous materials. Improper use or exposure can lead to health problems such as skin irritation, respiratory issues, burns, long-term illnesses and other serious risks. This qualification helps learners recognise these hazards and understand how risks can be controlled effectively. Throughout the course, learners will gain an understanding of COSHH regulations and why they are important in protecting employees and others from exposure to hazardous substances. The qualification provides practical knowledge on identifying hazards, understanding warning labels and symbols, carrying out risk assessments and applying suitable control measures to reduce risks in the workplace. Key areas covered may include: • Understanding what substances hazardous to health are • Understanding COSHH legislation and responsibilities • Identifying workplace hazards and associated risks • Reading and understanding hazard warning labels and symbols • Understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS) • Conducting COSHH risk assessments • Applying control measures and safe systems of work • Using personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly • Understanding exposure routes and health effects • Responding to incidents and emergency procedures The qualification is suitable for a wide range of industries including security, cleaning, construction, healthcare, manufacturing, warehousing, hospitality, education and general business environments where hazardous substances may be present. Upon successful completion, learners will receive a recognised Highfield qualification demonstrating their understanding of safe working practices and COSHH requirements.
